Name/Nickname: Neil Olonoff /Olonoff
Types of speculative fiction you write: I’ve written horror (published in Karl Edward Wagner’s Year’s Best Horror Stories IX, 1981), Fantasy (Unearth), straight fiction (pub. in A Touch of Paris), and written three unpublished novels and a novella in various genres. Now I’m two years into an SF/ political satire focusing on the collision of fantastic viewpoints that constitutes discourse in broadcast, cable and social media today.
How long have you been writing?: Since the mid 1970s. While I worked at various jobs, I woke at 4 am every day to try to finish various novels. I’ve finished (but not published) three. I submitted my first, an afterlife thriller, and got some good “reads.” In those days, I would try to write things based on what we now call current “memes.”
What are your goals for joining the group? I’ve always gotten a lot of value from writing groups. Everyone’s opinion matters and all are potential readers. My age and cultural background (72, white, cisgender, no tattoos or other mods) locates me outside of the current SF&F mainstream. I’d appreciate support in writing a bit more inclusively, especially for people of my nephews’ and nieces’ generations! And, of course, locating boneheaded plot holes, absurd premises etc.
Any publishing plans? Yes, finally, for the present novel-in-progress, entitled Colliding Planes.
Do you agree to follow all of the rules stated in the rules forum?: Yes.
How did you find us? Twitter. Did another member refer you? Nope.
Tell us a little about yourself! Married, white cisgender. Brooklyn-born. Have lived in NY, Oklahoma, Miami, Boca, Brazil, Paris, Northern Virginia, and now Lewes, DE. I speak Spanish, Portuguese and French. I’ve had experience as an exporter, languagge school director, marketer, and business writer, but since 2000 I’ve been a “knowledge management” consultant, which is all about collaboration and using tools like this board, among other things. I’ve worked in almost exclusively in Federal agencies, including the Army at the Pentagon, and have some specialized knowledge from those experiences.
Any non-writing interests or hobbies you'd care to share? I suffer from a fountain pen fetish, and write with them. Reading, reading, reading of course. Guitars and classic blues. Fly tying, rig tying and saltwater fishing. Riding my recumbent trike (Catrike 559). Cooking and foodie trivia. (I actually created a food trivia game called Foodie Craze.)
Would you like to join the discord server as well? Sure. Not certain how active I will be.
