Name/Nickname: I'm Jonathan.
Types of speculative fiction you write: My thematic interests include antiheroes, families of choice, trust, risk, cooperation versus conflict, and autonomy versus hierarchy within bureaucracies. In terms of speculative fiction, I've gravitated toward space opera involving traders in a mercantilistic system, a sort of reimagining of Firefly that updates and in some respects moves away from the "Outlaw Josey Wales in space" premise of that TV series. Though any material I share here will reflect the genre focus of this forum, honesty requires me to admit my major project is a detective series involving a PI couple.
How long have you been writing? I have developed concrete ideas for a novel series only in the last decade.
What are your goals for joining the group? Any publishing plans? Eventually I want to publish a novel that will sell well and stand the test of time. In service of this goal, I seek to nurture beta-reader relationships and become more proficient in critiquing styles that respect deferral of detail (developmental issues before line editing, and so on). When giving feedback, I try to be an encourager.
Do you agree to follow all of the rules stated in the rules forum? Yes.
How did you find us? Did another member refer you? I'm responding to an invitation placed in the Facebook group for former attendees of the Surrey International Writers' Conference.
Tell us a little about yourself! Any non-writing interests or hobbies you'd care to share? I am profoundly deaf, but not Deaf, since I grew up in a mainstreamed, total-communication environment with English-based sign language. I'm also late Generation X (born mid-1970's).
Would you like to join the discord server as well? Yes, I'd be interested.
