Hey all,
Nice to join you all in this new place. I always love connecting with those who still remember AQC fondly. And even if you weren't there, I'm happy to know you all.
BTW, if anyone is interested, one of the other former AQC moderators, R.S. Mellette, has a new book coming out through my publishing company (Elephant's Bookshelf Press) later this month--Kiya and the Morian Treasure. Old folks might remember RS pitching what was then called something like Hannah and her Adventures in Outer Space (I can't remember the title--it came to me as Dark Star Warriors)
If we ever want to do a chat about the evolution of a writing project of love, I'd be happy to share some experiences. I'm sure most of us can relate to that path!
And as I'm prone to do, I dove in without reading the initial introduction:
Name/Nickname: I'm Matt, I'm also elephantguy or elephantguy68. It's not a political thing; I've loved elephants since one of my first blankies as a little kid.
Types of speculative fiction you write: When I write spec fiction, it's often with a satirical or humorous bent, or it's space related sci-fi. I love both. I grew up as a Star Trek nerd (though I enjoy Star Wars and pretty much anything else that's well written and takes place in space)
How long have you been writing?: I don't remember ever NOT writing. All my life I've made up stories and songs--I still have the melodies and early lyrics in my brain of a song I sang to myself as I walked to kindergarten. Professionally, I've worked as a journalist since graduating college with a degree in English.
What are your goals for joining the group? Any publishing plans?: My plans with the group are to keep in touch with other writers who I admire. I am also the publisher at Elephant's Bookshelf Press, which as of this moment is about to publish its 15th title, Kiya and the Morian Treasure, which is the launch of a new SF series. Think of it as Xena in Space.
Do you agree to follow all of the rules stated in the rules forum?: Absolutely, my proclivity to write introductions without reading what we were looking for, notwithstanding.
How did you find us? Did another member refer you? I was part of AgentQuery Connect, where I served as the nonfiction moderator and was a member of Clippership's Speculative Fiction group. I followed when she set up the most recent group, joined the Discord server, and moseyed over here too. Happy to be with you all!
Tell us a little about yourself! Any non-writing interests or hobbies you'd care to share?: I'm a dad of twin teenagers and all that entails. One of them is autistic, mostly nonverbal, which is a challenge, to be sure but at this point, I couldn't imagine her any other way. Her sister (they're both girls), is starting to come into her own as she plays soccer and softball and has just helped create a newspaper club at her school. I love them as much as I love my wife of many but not enough years. And I'm a lifelong N.Y. Mets fan. It's nice to finally root for Max Scherzer instead of seeing him as an amazingly talented opponent.
Would you like to join the discord server as well? I'm there.
